Terms of Use

What this service does

Explain My Contract provides plain-English explanations of contracts using AI. You upload or paste a contract, and we produce a summary to help you understand the key terms.

The explanation is an informational summary based on the text you provide. You should always refer to the original document for exact wording and rely on the original contract - not our summary - for any decisions or actions.

Important:

  • This is general information only.
  • It is NOT legal advice.
  • You remain responsible for decisions you make based on this explanation.

No legal advice

The explanations provided by this service are informational only and do not constitute legal advice. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal services.

If you need advice about a contract, its enforceability, your rights, or your obligations, you should consult a qualified UK solicitor or other appropriate professional.

We make no representations about the legal effect of any contract or the accuracy of our explanations in any particular situation.

Who this is for

This service is designed for UK freelancers, contractors, and small businesses who want to understand contract wording before signing.

It is not a replacement for advice from a solicitor, accountant, or qualified professional. If you are in doubt about any term, seek professional help.

Your responsibilities

  • Right to upload. You must have the right to upload or paste the contract. This means you own the document, are a party to it, or have permission from the relevant parties to share it.
  • Review the original. You must review the original contract yourself. Our explanation is a starting point only.
  • Seek professional advice. You should consult a qualified solicitor before signing anything significant or if you have concerns.
  • Your decisions. You are responsible for any decisions or actions you take based on this explanation.

Regarding sensitive content:

We recommend you use the redaction and anonymisation tools provided to remove or mask any content you are not comfortable sharing before processing. See the Privacy Controls section below.

Privacy controls

We provide tools to help you control what information is sent for processing:

  • Review before processing. After uploading, you can review the extracted text before anything is sent.
  • Redaction. You can manually select and redact any text you don't want processed. Redacted content is replaced with [REDACTED] and is never sent to our AI provider.
  • Anonymisation/tokenisation. You can replace names, companies, and other identifiers with anonymous tokens (e.g., ⟦PERSON_1⟧, ⟦COMPANY_A⟧) before processing. This helps protect identities while preserving the contract's meaning.
  • Session clearing. You can clear your session data at any time using the button in the navigation. Data also auto-clears after inactivity or when you close your browser.

See our Privacy Policy for full details on how your data is handled.

Data handling

  • No server-side storage. We do not store your contract content or generated explanations on our servers.
  • Browser session only. Your contract text and results are stored temporarily in your browser session while you use the service.
  • AI processing. Your prepared text (after any redaction or tokenisation you apply) is sent to our AI provider to generate the explanation.
  • Automatic clearing. Session data is cleared when you close your browser, manually clear your session, or after 15 minutes of inactivity.

Accuracy and limitations

Explanations are generated by AI and have inherent limitations:

  • May contain errors. AI-generated content may misinterpret, oversimplify, or incorrectly explain contract terms.
  • Not guaranteed complete. Complex, unusual, or poorly formatted clauses may be simplified, missed, or misunderstood.
  • General in nature. Explanations do not account for your specific circumstances, industry norms, or legal context.
  • Contracts vary widely. Terminology, structure, and legal effects differ across industries and jurisdictions.

You should always verify against the original contract and seek professional advice if anything is unclear or significant.

Prohibited content

You must not upload content that is:

  • Illegal or promotes illegal activity
  • Fraudulent or intended to deceive
  • Harmful, abusive, or threatening
  • Content you do not have the right to share (see Your Responsibilities)

We reserve the right to refuse service if we reasonably believe content violates these terms.

Payments & refunds

  • One-off payment. You pay £2.99 per explanation. No subscriptions.
  • Secure processing. Payments are handled by Stripe. We do not receive or store your card details.
  • No automatic refunds. Payment is final once complete.
  • Problems? If the service doesn't work or you have a complaint, contact support@explainmycontract.co.uk.
  • Refunds are discretionary. We will consider refund requests on a case-by-case basis.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by UK law, Explain My Contract is not liable for:

  • Losses, damages, or negative outcomes resulting from use of the explanation.
  • Errors, omissions, or misinterpretations in the summary.
  • Missed or misunderstood clauses.
  • Decisions you make based on this explanation.
  • Any loss of profit, opportunity, or business.

Our liability is limited to the amount you paid for the service (£2.99), to the extent permitted by law.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms at any time. If we make significant changes, we will note the updated date at the top of this page.

Continued use of the service means you accept the updated terms.
